This is a story that was written by Toomak. He feels confident in this story unlike he did with his other story The Mage's Tower. An alternate title to this story would be Shegen's Destiny

Chapter 1

Shegen woke up and hit his head on the bunk above. He groaned. Not again, he thought. That was the third time this week. He hated being on the bottom. He always hit his head when he woke up. Shegen stretched his legs over the side of the bed and got out. He brushed his long, brown hair out of his blue eyes and looked around. All of the other boys were already getting dressed for training. He grimaced at the thought of the day of training that was about to start.

Shegen stretched his muscular seventeen-year-old body and started walking towards the door on the far side of the big room. He was not ready for the first day of training in a week, this due to the incredible amount of snow. His muscles were stiff from no exercise in that long and would take a day or two to relax. Shegen reached the door which he opened quickly and sprinted down the corridor.

He passed doors with kids younger and older than him, all getting ready for training. He entered a door with boys roughly his age. The room was large and the walls were made with the same gray stone as the corridor and bunkroom. The only difference was that the walls were covered in cubbyholes. Shegen strutted over toward a cubby with his name engraved in a gold plaque above the cubby. As he walked over toward his cubby he was greeted with friendly voices.

“Hey, Shegen!”

“How ya doin’!”

“Think you woke up early enough?”

“Hey guys,” Shegen replied, still incredibly tired. He finally reached his cubby. Shegen reached inside and took out a piece of chainmail and started to put it on. He was about to reach in his cubby and take out his bronze armor when a familiar voice came from behind him.

“What’s up Shegen?” Shegen turned to see his best friend Zain, looking at him. He was a tall boy, standing at about 5’9” with short, black hair.

“Feels pretty good to back into training, doesn’t it?” Shegen asked him. “Yeah, I guess it does.” replied Zain in and inconvincible voice.

“What’s wrong, I thought you loved training?” Shegen asked, getting on his armor.

“Well I’ve been thinking, and we’ve been in training for a while now…” said Zain, letting his voice trail off.

“So, what about it?” Shegen questioned.

“So, it probably means that we’re attacking or expecting to be attacked soon!” was Zain’s snappy response.

“Oh… well it’s not like we’re going to be attacked today,” said Shegen, “Now c’mon let’s go eat we’ll need it”

A few minutes later Zain and Shegen were eating bread and cheese at the breakfast table. “So, what’d you reckon we’ll do in training today?” Shegen asked through a mouthful of food.

“Oh… the usual; long range, melee, and maybe a little smithing.” Zain replied casually.

“Yeah, probably… so, listen about being attacked I don’t think that it will happen anytime soon- no, listen,” snapped Shegen at Zain’s look of protest, “Seka Castle has been training men for generations expecting a major attack and we’ve only gotten a few minor ones from surrounding castles.”

“Yeah, I guess so” said Zain, obviously not agreeing with Shegen but not saying anything. The rest of the meal was eaten in silence and soon the boys were headed outside.
